HVAC installation for buildings in Terrassa

Design and installation of HVAC in Terrassa, from high-ceilinged former textile buildings to industrial estate units and education buildings, sized for the inland climate.

Installing HVAC in Terrassa often means working in buildings that were never designed for it. The town retains an industrial heritage from its textile era, with modernista mills and factory buildings converted into offices, training centres or public facilities, alongside industrial estates, schools and university buildings. This service is for owners, property managers and technical managers facing a refurbishment, a change of use or the replacement of a system. MRS Climatización designs the solution, carries it out and leaves it ready for maintenance.

Large volumes in former textile buildings

Terrassa's industrial buildings often have high ceilings, saw-tooth roofs with rooflights and thick brick walls. In these spaces:

  • Warm air collects at the top, which penalises heating and means thinking carefully about where air is supplied.
  • Rooflights bring in daylight, but also heat gains in summer depending on their orientation and condition.
  • Mezzanines and internal partitions create zones with very different loads within the same building.

So the proposal starts from how each space is actually used, not from the total volume. Where there are many zones with different hours, the zoned systems described on the VRF and fan-coil systems page are usually a good fit.

Where to put the outdoor units

In the town centre and in buildings of heritage value, the location of outdoor units shapes the whole project. We take into account visibility from the street, whether the roof can bear the weight, noise towards neighbours and clear space for the condenser to reject heat in summer. Permissions from the owner, the community of owners or, in protected buildings, any others that apply are identified before the solution is finalised.

Sizing for the inland climate

Terrassa has hotter summers and colder winter mornings than the coast. A unit sized on Barcelona assumptions may fall short on July afternoons or lose output in winter. For heat pumps and aerothermal systems, we account for defrost cycles and performance at low outdoor temperatures; for cooling, for the temperature of the air the condenser will receive on the roof.

Electrical capacity and panels

In older buildings and in industrial estate units that have changed activity, the supply and panels were often designed for a different use. Because MRS also carries out electrical installations, panels and automation, the power supply to the equipment, protective devices and controls are handled within the same project, without relying on another installer to complete commissioning.

Working in occupied buildings, organised from Sabadell

In schools, the most disruptive work is concentrated in the holidays; in offices and shops, it is organised in phases and agreed time slots, including out-of-hours work arranged in advance. Materials and equipment are prepared at the production and warehouse base in Sabadell, next door to Terrassa, which makes it easier to coordinate deliveries with each phase. The full method is explained on the HVAC installation for buildings page, and the wider picture of the comarca on the Vallès Occidental page.

On completion, every unit is labelled and documented so that its history begins on the first day of maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Can a protected former industrial building be air-conditioned without altering its facade?

In many cases, yes, by finding outdoor unit positions that cannot be seen from the street, such as inner roofs or courtyards, and routing pipework and ducts internally. The solution depends on which elements are protected and on the relevant permissions, which the owner obtains. These constraints are assessed during the diagnosis, before the system is chosen.

Which system suits an old industrial building with very high ceilings?

It depends on the use. If people only work at floor level, it makes sense to supply air close to the occupied zone rather than condition the whole volume, and to consider destratification in winter. If the space has been divided into offices with mezzanines, a zoned system such as VRF or fan-coils with independent control may be more suitable.

Does aerothermal heating work with Terrassa's winters?

It can work well, but winter mornings are colder than on the coast. Output falls as the outdoor temperature drops and defrost cycles become more frequent, so the equipment is sized for those conditions. It performs best with low-temperature emitters and in reasonably well insulated buildings.

Can the work in an education building be done during the holidays?

That is the usual approach. Work that affects classrooms or requires supply interruptions is concentrated in the holidays, with materials prepared beforehand and any parts that do not disrupt activity completed in advance. On larger projects, the work is split into phases that fit into different non-teaching periods.

Will we need to increase the contracted electrical capacity?

It depends on the system chosen and the existing installation. In older buildings, the supply and panels were often designed for other uses. The diagnosis reviews the available capacity and the panels, and the proposal states whether they need upgrading. MRS also carries out the electrical work within the same project.
