HVAC installation in Barcelona

HVAC installation and renewal in Barcelona buildings, resolving equipment location, noise, works permits and electrical capacity.

Installing or renewing the HVAC in a Barcelona building means first answering questions that have nothing to do with load calculations: where the outdoor units can go, how much noise the neighbours will accept, whether the building is protected and whether there is enough electrical capacity. This page is for owners, property managers and technical managers planning a refurbishment, an office fit-out or a system replacement in the city, and describes how we apply our HVAC installation for buildings service in Barcelona.

Siting equipment in a Barcelona building

Outdoor space is the main constraint. Roofs are usually shared and already occupied by other equipment, inner courtyards have limited ventilation, and the street facade is almost never an option. On listed or protected buildings, the conditions on anything visible on the roof or facade are stricter still. Before a system is chosen, we check:

  • Which roof or courtyard space can be used, and with what consent from the owner or the owners' association.
  • Whether the building has a protection level that limits visible units.
  • Which routes are available for pipework and ductwork without damaging features of value.

Where outdoor space is scarce, it is worth considering systems that concentrate plant in a few units, such as VRF or water-fed fan-coil solutions. The differences are explained on the VRF and fan-coil systems page.

Noise and living alongside neighbours

In the city, many offices, hotels and shops share a building with flats. An outdoor unit badly placed in an inner courtyard can carry noise and vibration into bedrooms on other floors, especially if it runs at night. That is why we choose units with suitable sound levels, anti-vibration supports and positions away from windows, and take into account the noise requirements that apply in residential areas.

Offices in 22@ and on the business corridors

In office buildings, installation is usually a fit-out for a new tenant on top of the building's base system. The work involves connecting new terminal units to the existing central plant, integrating them into the centralised controls and coordinating with the landlord and the other trades on site. This is the kind of work we carried out in an office refurbishment in the Alta Diagonal area. For the sector as a whole, see office HVAC maintenance.

Refurbishing a whole building

When an entire building is refurbished, the HVAC can be rethought together with the electrics, water and finishes rather than squeezed into what is already there. That was the case at Residencia CollBlanc, where MRS renewed all installations and finishes. Handling everything in one project means routes, accessible ceiling voids and electrical zoning can be decided once.

Cranes, the public highway and site logistics

Lifting an outdoor unit onto the roof or removing the old one may require a crane and, with it, a municipal permit to occupy the street. That process has its own lead times, so it is built into the works programme from the proposal stage. Where a crane is not feasible, we assess dismantling the units into parts or choosing models that can be carried up the stairs or in the lift. Removal of old equipment includes recovery of its refrigerant.

Electrical capacity in older buildings

Switching from a gas boiler to a heat pump or aerothermal system, or adding equipment in an older building, can exceed the available power or the capacity of the existing supply line. Because we also carry out electrical installations and panels, upgrading the supply line, protective devices and panel is handled within the same project, without relying on another installer to complete commissioning.

Frequently asked questions

Can an outdoor unit be installed on the facade of an Eixample building?

In general, units visible from the street are tightly restricted in Barcelona, and even more so on protected buildings. The usual approach is to find a location on the roof or in an inner courtyard, always with the consent of the owner or the owners' association. Before design, it is worth confirming the building's protection level and the municipal conditions that apply, and choosing the system to suit the space available.

Who deals with the crane or street occupation permit?

The technical proposal states whether the works need a crane or occupation of the street, and how the permit will be handled is agreed. What matters is building its lead time into the programme, because it determines when units can be lifted up or taken away. If there is an alternative without a crane, such as dismantling the unit into parts, that is assessed too.

We are changing the layout of our 22@ office. Does the HVAC have to be redone?

Not always. It is often enough to move or add terminal units, modify ductwork and grilles and reprogramme the controls, using the building's existing central plant. We check whether the capacity available to your floor covers the new occupancy, for example if there will be more meeting rooms. The work is coordinated with the landlord and the other trades on site.

How do you stop new units from disturbing the neighbours?

By choosing units with sound levels suited to a residential setting, placing them away from bedroom windows and mounting them on anti-vibration supports. In inner courtyards, where sound bounces between walls, location matters especially. We also consider whether the units will run at night, as in hotels, when making the selection.

Is there enough power to switch to aerothermal in an older building?

It depends on the building. In older blocks, the contracted power and the supply line were often sized for other uses, and a heat pump can exceed them. The diagnosis checks the power, the panel and the protective devices, and the proposal includes any electrical upgrade needed, which we can carry out within the same project.
